Gratefulness Project

We have a 20 minute car ride to school every morning. It had become torture. Parker and John Barton would argue most of the ride. I would turn the music up loud, then louder. The journey had become unbearable.

So, I prayed. Prayer, followed by quiet. Listening. I used to pray and then move on to the next task. But, I’ve learned to pray and just be. It doesn’t have to be long, a few minutes.

Gratefulness entered my mind.  I’ve learned when sadness starts in to journal what I’m thankful for. If it works for me, maybe it will work for them. The next morning, the Gratefulness Project began. I ask Parker to name 3 things that she is thankful for. Then, I ask John Barton to name his 3, which is always amusing. Sometimes his response is “Everything God created,” which means he is not in the mood to participate.

I will share 3 things I journaled that morning. One of the kids will pray out loud and then they will watch a short Youtube kids devotional on my phone. We’ve went from stress and anxiety to adding a positive routine into our day. I actually look forward to our morning car rides. Their little faces light up as they talk about their cousins, the sunrise, and what fun event they have coming up at school. It is magical. 🙂

What routines have you added that impact your life?

What are you grateful for?

  1. I set the “mood” in the mornings by talking in silly voices and waking the kids up with hugs and kisses. Their moods would be totally different if I went in, cut the lights on and said get up. Making them happy and excited to be awake makes for happier children, which makes for happier parents.

    1. For sure! As moms, we set the mood. Hugs, kisses and laughter are much better than the alternative. Love this! Thanks for sharing!! 🙂

  2. Everyday I tell my girls this little mantra it started when I was 12 my dad would wake me up with … get up get up its another day another chance to… and we would have to say “Change the world”. So with grace I started at 5 years old – then I added my own touch .now with Maddie 5 and Grace 13- everyday
Before the girls head off to school I say to them “it’s another day another chance to” … and they say “change the world“… I asked them how are you going to do this?
they say “be kind be loving and be like Jesus”
The only way to change the world to love people even the difficult ones. And if I’ve done nothing in my life at least they know that their mom told them they could be world changers.

    1. What a great way to start the morning. 🙂 Grace and Maddie will definitely be world changers.
